James William "Ham" Kelly, 93, passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at NHC Healthcare in Dunlap. He served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. He attended Dunlap United Methodist Church, where he was a member of Victory Bible Class, and also attended Welch Chapel United Methodist Church. He served on the Board of Directors of Mountain Valley Bank for more than 60 years, Dunlap Lions club fifty five years, Board of Directors and Treasure of Dunlap Industries forty three years, American Legion-Harvey Merriman Post No. 190- 40 years, board member of the Sequatchie County Veterans Memorial Park, Sequatchie County Memorial Post No. 5772 of the VFW, and the Chattanooga City Farmers. Mr. Kelly was the 6th child and only son of W.L. and Annie Hickman Kelly. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Grace Layne Kelly; daughter, Mary Jim Cogdell; sisters, Thelma, Ruth, Margaret and Betty. Survivors include son, William L."Chip" (Jill) Kelly; daughter, Susan (Lynn) Merriman, of Dunlap, Tenn.; sister, Irene K. Griffth, of Dunlap, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Evelyn Layne, of Dunlap, Tenn.; son-in-law, Charles Cogdell, of Cleveland, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Kelly (Joshua) Bishop, James (Sloane) Cogdell, Joshua (Stephanie) Merriman, Hannah Merriman, William L. Kelly, and Pamela (Cory) Turner; six great-grandchildren and two on the way; several nieces; and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m., CDT Thursday, April 21, 2016, in Ewton Funeral Home Chapel, with Bro. Doug Silvers officiating. The family will receive friends, from 1-6 p.m.. before the service. Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, in Kelly Family Cemetery, with full Military Honors by Sequatchie Valley Honor Guard.
